Description & Infos
Austria's most beautiful place 2015
Located at the end of the Zuger valley in the heart of the Lechquellen mountains, lake Formarin lies at an altitude of 1,793 metres above sea level. Fed by a natural spring, the water is supplemented annually by snowmelt, resulting in a variation in the size of the lake. Normally it is about 500 m long and 400 m wide with a maximum depth of 17 m.
His name „Formarin“ comes from an old German dialect name for the surrounding alpland. The area is still used for alpine farming today.
Lake Formarinsee is so special because it has no superficial runoff, but drains over a karst cave system. Part of the water flows into the river Lech and then into the Danube. The rest arrives after six to seven days at the creek Marulbach and flows through underground systems into the river Rhine.
Geographically, the lake is situated in the municipal area of Dalaas and is accessible on foot from the valleys Klostertal, Großes Walsertal and from Lech-Zürs. For those who prefer easier access, a bus runs directly from the Zuger valley to the Formarin lake.
